The West Side of Albuquerque is the fastest growing area in all of New Mexico.
Managing that growth demands engagement by a range of interest groups — municipal and county planning officials, elected representatives, commercial and residential developers, and the people who live on the West Side. At present, that does not always happen.
Plans are often announced only after most of the initial preparations are completed, leaving West Side citizens’ groups little opportunity to affect them.
Transportation, housing, businesses, land and water use, historic preservation, protection of the environment and more should be on the table in ways that allow for rational and balanced discussions before things are set in stone.
